Chapter 11- Disquiet

As long as he could remember, Adriano had never slept in. Perhaps as an infant he’d had the luxury of lying in bed waiting for a meal to appear, however, since the age of eleven, before his father was sentenced, he had chores to do about the home. After his father went to prison, he became the man of the house and the daily struggle to just eat became a new reality. Each day he rose, setting to work to make the frazzled ends come together, frayed or not, even if they didn’t meet, the two pieces were in close proximity. Some nights of his life, proximity was the closest a body got to success.

Through the years, his work ethic hadn’t changed. He rose daily, going to work to ensure he and Aunt Sue could eat, the taxes were paid on the farm, and the lady wanted for nothing. On Sunday mornings, when most would sleep in, he’d be up, headed to the farm to take her to Sunday service. It wasn’t much, but she looked forward to it and he didn’t want to let her down.

The letdown, as he lay in bed next to his wife who snored like a bear with its belly stuffed with salmon, was that he never had a chance to actually enjoy his life. When he was single, he’d barely enjoyed that portion of being a very virulent male and a better looking one of the species. He had work to do, patents to obtain on processes he’d perfected in computer aided design. Three years ago, he’d developed a new software application which made designing on the go possible. The reward was a fattened bank account.

A fat account made for a very thin love life, if one could call what he’d experienced in his fornicating years as romantic. He’d learned to pick career minded women who were not interested in settling in or settling down. He chose women who required a maintenance man, a man she could call when a Plus 1 was needed for a Holiday office party or the weekend retreat with married co-workers or friends necessitated a permanent man in the lady’s life. Jennifer Smalls counted on him for that in her life, and he’d provided what she needed. On occasion, when there were no scheduled maintenance visits with Jennifer, he would call on Heather to make a house call.

Heather was a messy woman, who left items lying about his apartment when he was done with her. She also didn’t want to go home and would bring work with her just in case he wanted or needed a round three. What he didn’t need was more of Heather. The arrangement fizzled quickly and Heather was replaced with Janine.

Janine turned out to be mentally askew and she had a thing about buttholes. Either she wanted Adriano to shove fruit in hers, then eat it, or she wanted to peg him. Janine only lasted two months. His butthole was angry at him for a lot longer.
